We understand that the recent reporting, prompted by elevated levels of glycoalkaloids and questioned nutritional content, has created concern. We therefore want to emphasise that all Petgood products, including the recalled batch, are assessed as safe and nutritious.
In December we chose to stop the sale of a batch of our dry food Premium Adult Dog, after an external test showed elevated levels of glycoalkaloids, a natural substance found in potato. As a direct response, we chose to recall the affected batch (best before: 2026-07), which was sold between March and June 2025, and informed the affected customers directly.
After we became aware of the test, we carried out extensive analyses and had close dialogue with both our production partners and the relevant authorities, including the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket) and the corresponding Finnish supervisory authority, the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto).
All Petgood products, including the recalled batch, are assessed as safe and nutritious.
At the same time, we want to be transparent that the levels of glycoalkaloids were higher than desirable. However, that does not mean the food is toxic.
Our production partner has over 20 years of experience in producing pet food and annually manufactures more than 20,000 tonnes of food that contains potato. They handle over 1,500 tonnes of potato-based raw materials per year and have no documented cases where glycoalkaloids have caused illness in dogs or cats. Production takes place in accordance with applicable EU legislation for the manufacture of pet food and with high quality requirements.
It is also important to highlight that the product's nutritional value and protein quality are of high quality. This is also confirmed in external tests, where both nutritional content receives high marks and protein quality achieves the highest score. This is also in line with current research in the field.
There are currently no statutory limit values within the EU for glycoalkaloids in dog food. EFSA has stated that levels above 100 mg/kg may warrant further analysis, but this is a guideline, not a safety limit.
The most recent production of Premium Adult Dog now on the market has confirmed levels of approximately 50 mg/kg glycoalkaloids in the finished product.
We have taken a number of measures to further strengthen quality and control throughout the supply chain, including tightened routines, clear target levels and expanded testing.
We have also made a strategic decision to completely exclude potato from all future productions of our dry food, in order to further minimise variation in raw materials.
