Sweden's future guide dogs are raised on Petgood

Beautifully located in the countryside outside Ljungskile is Kustmarkens Hundtjänst, a business run by owners Robert and Carina since 1993. A few years ago Robert and Carina chose to switch to Petgood for all their dogs in the business, both adult dogs in training and breeding bitches and puppies.

Get to know Kustmarken

We got the chance to meet the passionate Robert and Carina to learn more about their important work, and why a few years ago they chose to switch to Petgood's insect-based food.

Why was Kustmarken started?

Since 1993, Robert and Carina have wholeheartedly devoted themselves to breeding and training dogs, above all labradors with the goal of becoming approved guide dogs. Since the start, over 500 guide dogs have left Kustmarken and gone on to their working lives and brought joy and security to their handlers. But why was Kustmarken really started?

- We started Kustmarken above all because we wanted to make a big difference in society, something that affects people's lives in the long term, and of course a burning interest in dogs and developing good individuals, says Carina. Robert adds:

- We have now run Kustmarken for over 30 years and worked with people with different types of disabilities. The effects we've seen of the combination of human and dog, where the person actually feels better just from feeling the warmth and closeness of a dog, are absolutely fantastic. It has inspired us over all these years when we've seen that what we do really makes a difference.

What is the guide dog's job?

At Kustmarken the dogs receive basic training so they can then work as guide dogs:

- We mainly work with guide dogs for people with visual impairments. The person's task is to know where to go, and the dog's task is to lead the person there. What we teach the dogs here is to avoid obstacles and work according to a certain system in order to lead the person safely from A to B, Robert explains!

Why is the right food important?

Both in the breeding operation, during training and out in their new working lives, the dogs' food is of the greatest importance. It needs to be of high quality so that the dogs feel good, easily absorb the nutrition and have gastrointestinal systems in good shape.

- We want the best food for our dogs; it makes a big difference. It should be high quality, give nice coats, the dog should be able to absorb the nutrition, and when it's good for the environment at the same time, well then it's just perfect, says Carina.

Robert proudly shows off one of the new future guide dog stars, a black labrador puppy of five weeks:
